Electrical power cables undergo regular insulation performance tests under power-off conditions, in accordance with the items and test cycles specified in the Test Procedures for Handover & Preventive Tests of Electrical Equipment. Among all test methods, the frequency-tuned series resonance withstand voltage test is most widely adopted domestically, as its test conditions closely simulate the actual operating state of cables.
Nevertheless, abundant test data and practical experience prove that the series resonance withstand voltage test cannot quantitatively evaluate the overall health status of cables. High-voltage cables that have passed this test may still suffer dielectric breakdown within a short period. Long-term research and experiments on high-voltage cables have verified that partial discharge is the precursor to cable insulation faults; effective partial discharge detection is therefore a vital approach to elevate cable condition-based maintenance standards.
The Oscillating Wave Test System (OWTS) represents an innovative technique for cable condition maintenance. Traditional OWTS applies DC voltage to XLPE cables to diagnose and locate partial discharge under damped oscillating wave conditions. However, DC withstand voltage tests on XLPE cables tend to accumulate space charge, which causes latent damage to cable insulation and easily triggers false partial discharge signals, leaving room for further optimization.
To solve these drawbacks, we developed an AC Damped Oscillating Wave Partial Discharge Test Device. Equipped with an AC high voltage source, it is built upon the AC series resonance boost platform. A peak synchronous signal cuts off power output at the resonance peak while closing the high-voltage electronic switch simultaneously, generating damped oscillation to carry out partial discharge tests on power cables.
It reliably detects tiny insulation defects on cables and cable joints with precise positioning capability.
This all-in-one unit supports both partial discharge measurement under oscillating wave conditions on site, and standard frequency-tuned series resonance AC withstand voltage tests for cable handover & preventive maintenance. Dual functions greatly improve equipment utilization efficiency.
