Online Cable Monitoring: Partial Discharge, Sheath Current, Temperature and Fault Location

Four monitoring systems that watch a cable while it stays in service. Between them they cover the three failure mechanisms that matter on high voltage cable — insulation degradation, sheath and grounding problems, and overheating at joints — plus continuous fault location so a trip is answered with a location instead of a search.

What is in this section

  • Partial discharge monitoring — the HF-C-201 cable partial discharge monitoring system tracks discharge activity in cable insulation and joints continuously, so a rising trend is visible long before an outage test would find it.
  • Sheath and grounding current — the HF-C-202 cable sheath grounding current monitoring system is specified for 35 kV, 110 kV and 220 kV and above cable lines, sampling every 1 ms so transient waveform detail survives, with split-core clamp-on current transformers rated for at least DC 10 kV for 1 minute so they can be fitted on a live line.
  • Temperature monitoring — the HF-C-203 cable temperature online monitoring system supports up to 256 acquisition terminals with four temperature channels each and transmits over a self-organising Zigbee network with GPRS/4G and LoRa options — the arrangement that lets one installation follow every joint along a duct.
  • Fault location monitoring — the HF-C-204 cable fault location monitoring system keeps the location function armed permanently rather than only during a fault-finding visit.

How to choose cable monitoring

Decide what you need to know first: insulation condition points to partial discharge monitoring, sheath and grounding problems to current monitoring, and joint overheating to distributed temperature measurement. Then check the installation constraints — whether sensors can be fitted without a shutdown, and how the data reaches your control room (RS485, Ethernet, 4G or IEC 61850). On existing ducts, live-line installation capability usually decides which system is practical.
