Nine instruments for overhead line and insulator work: ultrasonic and electrical detection of insulators in service, salt density and contamination measurement, insulation resistance testing and the core-rod and voltage distribution tests used on composite insulators.

What is in this section

• Insulator detection in service — the HF-LT-301 ultrasonic power line detector uses a built-in ultrasonic sensor with a horn antenna and a green laser aiming device, reading −60 to 60 dB in 1 dB steps at ±1 dB accuracy and showing the original discharge waveform alongside the dB value. The HF-LT-304 live insulator resistance tester and the HF-LT-307 intelligent insulator tester measure without taking the line out of service.
• Pollution and salt density — the HF-LT-302 insulator salt density tester measures NSDD over 0.01–4.5 mg/cm² and ESDD over 0.01–3.0 mg/cm² at ±1 %, with conductivity measurement from 0 to 20000 μS/cm and temperature from 0 to 60 °C — the measurement that sorts a site into the standard pollution grades from 0.025 mg/cm² and below up to above 0.25 mg/cm².
• Insulator and core rod testing — the HF-LT-303 post insulator tester detects internal defects over 0–15000 mm at 0.2–20 MHz with sound velocity from 100 to 20000 m/s, a repetition frequency of 20–2000 Hz and a dynamic range of 36 dB or better. Also the HF-LT-305 insulator voltage distribution tester and the HF-LT-306 insulator core rod test leakage current tester.
• Insulation resistance — the HF-LT-308 digital insulation resistance meter and the HF-LT-309 wireless insulator insulation resistance tester.

How to choose an insulator tester

Choose by the failure you are looking for. Contamination and pollution flashover are found by salt density measurement and leakage current; internal defects in porcelain or composite insulators need ultrasonic or voltage-distribution testing, and composite insulators need a core rod check that a simple insulation resistance reading will not give you. Confirm the voltage class and whether the test has to be done with the line energised.
