Working Principle of SF6 Gas Leakage Monitoring
-
Gas Sampling & Detection
Distributed sensors installed indoors collect ambient air continuously. The built-in infrared sensor absorbs specific wavelength light consumed by SF6 molecules. According to Lambert-Beer law, the device calculates real-time SF6 concentration; meanwhile it detects oxygen content to prevent staff hypoxia.
-
Signal Transmission
Measured gas data is transmitted to the main control host via LoRa wireless or RS485 wired communication. Signal repeaters are deployed on site to strengthen signals for long-distance and complex layout scenarios. -
Data Processing & Judgment
The main unit analyzes received gas values in real time. Once SF6 concentration exceeds the preset threshold or oxygen level is too low, the system triggers linkage logic automatically. -
Linked Execution Actions
It activates audible & visual alarms, starts exhaust fans to discharge leaked SF6 gas. The infrared sensor monitors personnel access; historical monitoring data is stored locally and displayed on the 21-inch touch screen and external LED scrolling screen synchronously.
Specification Checklist Before You Order
The same leak reads very differently depending on the room and the sampling layout. These points decide how an SF6 monitoring system has to be configured for your substation.
| Item to confirm | Why it changes the configuration |
|---|---|
| Room volume and air exchange rate | A small, poorly ventilated room reaches a given concentration far faster than a large hall; the alarm strategy has to match the room, not the gas. |
| Number and height of sampling points | SF6 is heavier than air and collects at low level, so sampling at ceiling height can read low while gas is already present where people work. |
| Alarm thresholds | Thresholds have to come from the occupational exposure limit you work to and from the GIS manufacturer guidance — not from a default value. |
| Oxygen monitoring | Because SF6 displaces air in low areas, oxygen channels are a site-safety decision taken together with the gas channels. |
| Ventilation interlock | Whether an alarm should start the extract fans automatically, and at which alarm stage, is an interlock design decision. |
| Where alarms must appear | A local sounder, the control room, or the plant SCADA — three different outputs answered by different modules. |
| Calibration and reference gas | Every infrared sensor needs periodic checking against a reference gas; the interval and who supplies the gas should be fixed at order. |
| Zoning of a large substation | In a multi-bay GIS hall the system is normally split into zones so that an alarm points to the right bay instead of the whole room. |
Send us the answers with the equipment list or single-line diagram, and the configuration can be fixed without a second site visit.
