During the manufacturing of semi-finished and finished power transformers, before newly installed transformers are put into service, and in accordance with the preventive test codes issued by national power authorities, it is mandatory to perform turns ratio / voltage ratio tests on in-service transformers. Such tests verify the correctness of transformer turn ratios, check the working condition of tap changers, detect transformer inter-turn short circuits, and determine whether transformers are qualified for parallel operation.

Operation Steps for Handheld TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio) Tester
Pre-operation Preparation & Safety Check
- Confirm the transformer is fully powered off, grounded reliably, and discharge all residual electricity of the transformer winding to eliminate electric shock risks.
- Unpack the tester, inspect the main unit, test cables and power cord for damage, abrasion or breakage.
- Place the handheld tester on a flat, dry site; avoid strong electromagnetic interference near high-voltage equipment.
- Check the battery level of the device; fully charge the battery if the power indicator shows low power.
Wiring Connection
- Connect the matched test cable set to the corresponding test terminals on the handheld TTR tester strictly following the wiring marks.
- Link the high-voltage side and low-voltage side test clips to the transformer’s primary winding and secondary winding terminals respectively. Ensure clips clamp tightly with good metal contact, remove rust, paint and oxide layers on wiring terminals.
- Double-check the wiring sequence and polarity to prevent wrong connection which will cause test failure or device damage.
Parameter Setting on Device
- Power on the handheld tester, wait for the system to finish self-check and enter the main operation interface.
- Select corresponding working mode: Single-phase Test / Three-phase Test according to the transformer winding connection mode (Y, Δ, YΔ etc.).
- Input the rated transformation ratio and vector group number marked on the transformer nameplate.
- Set required test parameters: test voltage, data storage options, alarm threshold etc.
Implement Formal Test
- Tap the Start Test icon on the screen; the internal three-phase inverter power supply of the tester will output low testing voltage automatically.
- The device automatically collects signals, calculates actual turns ratio, ratio error and phase angle data in real time.
- The whole measuring process takes only several seconds; do not touch test clips and wiring during testing.
- Once testing is completed, the screen displays measured ratio value, error percentage and phase angle deviation intuitively.
Data Save, View & Export
- Save the qualified test data to the local storage of the handheld tester.
- Browse historical test records directly on the machine screen if needed; export data via USB interface to U disk for report making.
- Compare the measured data with the theoretical rated ratio: the test result is qualified when the error is within the equipment accuracy range.
Post-test Shut-down & Arrangement
- Exit the test interface, cut off the tester output power first, then power off the main unit.
- Remove test clips from transformer terminals in order, then disconnect test cables from the tester ports.
- Organize all cables neatly, put the tester and accessories into the carrying case, and store in a dry and ventilated environment.

- Never perform testing on live transformers.
- Do not pull test wires forcibly during measurement.
- Stop testing immediately and power off the device if abnormal heat or screen error occurs.
