Overview

Ground faults in DC power systems occur frequently and bring severe hazards to power grids. Either positive pole grounding or negative pole grounding may lead to protective relay misoperation or refusal to operate, disrupting the normal operation of the power system.
The Chinese Electric Power Industry Standard DL/T856-2004 specifies setting values for ground faults of various DC systems. When the system ground resistance falls below the specified threshold, the system is confirmed to be under faulty operation and requires immediate troubleshooting.
Due to the complexity and dynamic characteristics of DC systems, DC ground fault points are often hard to locate. The traditional pull-out circuit method is no longer permitted by current regulations for fault location, as it cannot guarantee system operational safety during troubleshooting.
To help on-site maintenance personnel quickly and accurately pinpoint ground fault points, our company has developed this portable DC ground fault finder based on years of field experience. It can diagnose various insulation faults for DC systems of 48V, 110V and 220V, including intermediate grounding, non-metallic grounding, loop grounding, simultaneous positive & negative grounding, balanced positive-negative grounding, AC-DC mixed grounding and multi-point grounding faults.
The HF-GT-215 DC System Ground Fault Tester adopts high-resolution sensor units to collect leakage current at grounding points. It can measure ground insulation resistance within 600kΩ under the 220V voltage level, featuring fast detection and precise positioning, which thoroughly solves insulation fault issues in DC power systems.

Working Principle

The portable DC ground fault finder operates based on leakage current signals produced at grounding points. If insulation failure takes place on any branch of the DC system, leakage current corresponding to the insulation resistance will form between the circuit and ground.
When insulation degradation with resistance Rx emerges on the negative pole, the total current passing through the positive and negative power cables feeding load RL will alter correspondingly.
By analyzing the system ground voltage and leakage current of each branch, the tester evaluates the overall insulation level of the system and locates insulation fault points on branches:
  • Testing at the upper side of the grounding point: the instrument outputs an insulation fault alarm signal
  • Testing at the lower side of the grounding point: the instrument indicates normal insulation status
This working principle enables precise positioning of ground faults.
The whole device is composed of two units: an Analyzer and a Detector.
  1. Connect the power wires of the Analyzer to the positive busbar, negative busbar and ground terminal of the measured DC system, then switch on the power supply. The Analyzer automatically analyzes the system insulation performance and displays parameters such as positive-to-ground voltage, negative-to-ground voltage and ground resistance on the LCD screen.
  2. When abnormal insulation is identified, operators can use the Detector to find the precise grounding location.
Wireless data communication is built between the Analyzer and Detector.
Fitted with a high-precision sampling module, the Detector measures leakage current of each branch. It receives ground voltage data wirelessly sent from the Analyzer, and further calculates the insulation resistance of the tested branch based on the collected voltage and current values.

System Ground Voltage Measurement

It measures positive-to-ground voltage, negative-to-ground voltage and overall system voltage, with a monitoring range of 0 ~ 300V.

System Insulation Resistance Measurement

Capable of testing the ground insulation resistance of both positive and negative poles; measuring range: 0 ~ 999.9kΩ.

AC Interference Detection

Detects AC intrusion faults within DC systems and measures superimposed AC voltage, with an AC voltage measuring range of 0 ~ 280V.

Branch Insulation Resistance Measurement

Separately measures the positive and negative pole ground insulation resistance of each individual branch circuit.

Branch Ground Fault Location

Accurately locates the precise grounding point on faulty circuit branches.

High-Precision Ammeter Function

Can be used as a high-precision ammeter, with a current resolution reaching 0.01mA.

Passive Ground Fault Search (No Signal Injection)

Locates grounding points without injecting any signals into the DC system, so the normal operation of the power system will not be affected.
