FAQ for High Voltage Cable Tan Delta Tester
Q1: What is tan delta testing for high voltage cables, and what does it measure?
A: Tan delta (dissipation factor) test is an offline HV cable insulation diagnostic technology. It detects the phase difference between test voltage and leakage current to measure cable dielectric loss, effectively assessing insulation aging, moisture ingress and internal defects. It is widely used to evaluate cable insulation health and guide equipment maintenance and replacement.
Q2: What types of cables is this tester suitable for?
A: This tester is suitable for routine testing and fault diagnosis of 10kV, 35kV, 110kV and other medium/high-voltage power cables, including XLPE, PVC and rubber insulated cables. It complies with the IEEE 400.2 industry standard for power grid and industrial cable detection.
Q3: What is the difference between VLF tan delta test and power frequency tan delta test?
A: 0.1Hz VLF tan delta test is the mainstream for HV cables. It features low power consumption, no insulation overheating damage, and high sensitivity to water tree and subtle aging defects. Power frequency (50/60Hz) test is not applicable for long HV cables due to large capacitive load and high power demand, only for short electrical equipment.
Q4: What are the qualified standard values for cable tan delta test results?
A: Per IEEE 400.2 standard: ① Excellent: Tan δ < 5×10⁻³, tip-up value (Δtan δ) < 4×10⁻³; ② Normal: Tan δ = 5×10⁻³ ~ 15×10⁻³; ③ Unqualified: Tan δ > 15×10⁻³ or obvious rising tip-up trend, indicating severe insulation aging, moisture or hidden defects.
Q5: What is tan delta tip-up value, and why is it important?
A: Tip-up value refers to the tan delta change when test voltage rises from U₀ to 2U₀. A stable, low-fluctuation value means uniform and healthy insulation. A sharp increase indicates hidden faults like water trees, micro-cracks and partial discharge, serving as a key indicator for potential insulation risks.
