Intelligent Power Frequency Withstand Voltage Test Set is widely adopted by electrical manufacturers, power utilities, research institutions and universities. The set falls into integrated type (below 30kV) and split type.
The control box/console consists of contact voltage regulator (motor-driven column regulator for capacity above 50kVA) as well as control, protection, measurement and signal circuits. Connected to 220V or 380V power frequency supply, it adjusts the input voltage of the test transformer and feeds voltage into the primary winding. Based on electromagnetic induction principle, required high test voltage can be obtained.
In accordance with test codes, periodic AC withstand voltage tests are mandatory for large power transformers, power cables, turbo and hydro generators and other capacitive equipment.

AC Hipot Tester – Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is an AC Hipot Tester used for?
A: It is a power frequency withstand voltage test device designed to verify the dielectric strength of electrical equipment. It effectively detects hidden insulation defects, dampness, cracks and weak points in transformers, power cables, switchgears and generators for factory inspection and substation preventive tests.
Q2: What is the working principle of the AC Hipot Tester?
A: The device inputs 220V/380V industrial frequency power, adjusts the voltage via the regulator, and boosts high voltage through the test transformer based on electromagnetic induction. It applies standard AC high voltage to the DUT to check insulation withstand capacity.
Q3: What is the difference between AC Hipot and DC Hipot test?
A: AC Hipot test simulates actual grid operating conditions with alternating polarity, leaves no residual charge and fits most conventional power equipment. DC Hipot test is more sensitive for capacitive loads but requires mandatory discharge after testing.
Q4: What are the working environment requirements?
A: It operates at AC 220V 50Hz power supply, ambient temperature from -40℃ to 40℃, and relative humidity ≤85% (25℃). It must be used in non-explosive, non-corrosive and rain-free environments.
Q5: Is the AC Hipot test destructive?
A: No. It is a standard non-destructive overvoltage test. When operated per standard procedures and rated parameters, it only exposes insulation flaws without damaging qualified equipment.
Q6: What protection functions does the tester have?
A: It is equipped with complete safety protections including over-current protection, zero-position start protection, and audio-visual voice alarm. It supports 1S~99H wide-range timing to ensure personnel and equipment safety.
Q7: What types can the AC Hipot Tester be divided into?
A: It includes two types: integrated type (for voltage below 30kV) and split type. The dry-type transformer structure features small size, light weight, moisture resistance and strong impact resistance.
Q8: Can this machine do DC withstand voltage tests?
A: Yes. Our dual-purpose model supports both AC and DC high voltage output, meeting diverse testing demands for different power equipment.
Q9: How to choose the right model?
A: Select the capacity and voltage level according to the DUT’s rated voltage and test standard requirements. We provide 1.5kVA~150kVA, 10kV~300kV customizable models for various scenarios.
Q10: What if over-current or flashover occurs during the test?
A: The device will trigger automatic over-current protection, cut off high voltage output immediately and activate sound-light alarm to avoid equipment damage and safety accidents.
